Association (Verein)

A German association (Verein) is a union of several persons (members) for the realization of a common purpose with the following characteristics:

  • It has a uniform name,
  • it is intended to last a certain time,
  • it is independent from the change of its members.

Both non-commercial (Idealverein) and commercial associations are permitted. A non-economic association receives legal personality upon registration in the association register (Vereinsregister). When such an association is registered, it is designated as eingetragener Verein (abbreviation "e.V.").
